I had been wanting to build a small robotics project in my free time for a while, and a self-balancing robot seemed like a good first try. Coming from software engineering, I played it safe and started from a kit — the Balanbot by Maker Studio.
Even with a kit, it needed tweaking: a custom battery adapter (and then a second version of it), and some debugging with the help of friends and colleagues. The full story, with photos and diagrams, is in the blog post.
